A new segment of the 5-mile long Hudson River Park is under construction and part of the design includes a new concrete skatepark. The segment, called the Chelsea Cove, is located between Piers 62-64 and will feature a large central lawn along with gardens, winding paths, and a carousel.
Chelsea Cove is scheduled to open in 2009. No details on the skatepark yet or who will be designing it, but I wouldn’t be surprised if local legend Andy Kessler is involved.
I’m still feeling the pain from 10 hours of skating this weekend. But how could I leave a quality built skate park just a few minutes from my apartment? This past Saturday, the relocated Hudson River Skatepark unofficially opened (Ernesto delayed the prior opening) and skaters from all over came out to test the waters. Even legendary Tony Alva was there ripping it up along with Fruit of the Vine directors/skaters, Coan Nichols and Rick Charnowsky.
The park definitely lives up to the hype with new lines abound in the bowl and mini ramp. The former kidney bowl now drops into a 10-foot section. The mini ramp is also a blast with the new spine-to-wall section and multi-level construction. The street course has little to brag about with no rails, but the big drop-in gives you enough speed to ollie over both sets, which is pretty fun. The park is located right next to the Heliport and the choppers are deafening, but I’ll have to admit, when they come in and the propellers hit the water, the mist sprays all over the park and it makes it all worth it. More pictures after the jump…
This weekend marks the long-awaited opening of the Hudson River Skatepark. It was moved from its former location in March to an area on the water just north of 30th Street (north of the Heliport). Slated to open in May, the construction was delayed and now we have only the Fall to hit this new park. It will be open only on weekends until October 29th, so get over there and check it out.
The park is an improvement to the original spot near Pier 26, which is saying a lot. With an additional 300 sq. ft. or so, park builder Andy Kessler and his team added a 10-ft deep section to the old 7-ft kidney bowl. The 4-ft mini-ramp is also wider, and a section includes a spine over to a bank wall. The street course also looks better with more flow and space to setup for the rails.
I should have some pics up soon after this weekend. Until then, check out this old school video from 1990 when Freestyle skateboarding was all the rage. Damn, skateboarding has come a long way in the past 15 years!
This may be the greatest footage I’ve ever seen of a football running back on any level. Even if you’re not a sports fan you gotta appreciate this. Noel Devine moves like pinball in a video game and this is only footage from his junior year in high school. Check out his cutback speed. Zoom!!! He should go play for Texas if he knows whats good for him. The Times has a nice article about him this past week. Makes Raykwon and Justine wanna strap on the pads and chase each other around the office. Ka-blam!
We already told you the success story of the skate spot called the Brooklyn Banks. This Saturday, Back to the Banks will take place for the second year. The event has been made possible with the hard work and efforts of Steve Rodriguez, owner of 5boro skateboards along with the support of Emerica, Red Bull, Volcom, Spitfire and Skateboarder magazine.
Come out and support your local skate rat and check out this legendary street spot. Bring your camera cause there’s bound to be some sick skating and nasty spills. Peep some footy from last year’s event to get you hype.
What: 3 Contests: ledges , rail/stairs, and banks/wallride. And a few thousand dollars worth of prizes. Where: Manhattan Side of the Brooklyn Bridge, right under the eastbound ramp to Brooklyn. J, M, Z, 4, 5 or 6 to Brooklyn Bridge-City Hall When: Saturday, August 19, 1 PM
everyone needs a hobby. some follow obscure bands, others surf in ball-numbing waters… me, well i enjoy getting my ass kicked. sure, this may be yet another phase like my earlier pursuits in handbag design, soap making, and harpguitar playing, but few things provide the rush like a thai kick to the head (both delivering and receiving)… yes, i like to receive too, as awkward as that sounds. so despite a few sprained jaws and chipped teeth, i return every week to satisfy my primal urges.
last weekend i participated in two 6-hour sessions with dan inosanto , bruce lee‘s top student, training partner, and the lead instructor of jeet kune do after bruce’s death. at 70 yrs old, the man was still faster than me after a dozen cans of sparks.
for a taste, check out this badass video of dan instructing a combination of filipino stick fighting and jeet kune do. 100% whoop ass.
