Thanks to everyone who made last week’s FRICTION show at Mercury Lounge a jam-packed, sold-out and festive affair. We’re back again this month with another show at Cake Shop on September 22nd with downtown darling, Lissy Trullie, atmospheric rockers Apse, who are making a special trip down to NYC following ATP New York and Jean on Jean. This will be Jean on Jean’s (Molly Schnick from Out Hud new project) debut live show in support of her new self-titled album (Kanine Records), so be sure to get there early!

LISSY TRULLIE sings with the boyish swagger of a ’60s frontman with a touch of Liz Phair and plays guitar a bit like one too. Her band harbors key pieces of 1960s folkishness making their music a vintage yet modern affair. [Pretty In Black]

The first rumble of percussion and muscular, sharply panned bass guitar, demonstrates why “post-rock” isn’t quite the best word for
APSE‘s forceful atmospheric rock. Yes, the guitars settle into densely knotted krautrock repetitions, changing textures more readily than chords. Yes, the synths are glacial, majestic. Yes, Robert Toher’s reverb-cloaked ethereal wail could nestle easily into a latter-day Radiohead or Sigur Ros track, but that grimly apocalyptic rhythm section suggests

It has been a while since we heard from Out Hud’s Molly Schnick, whose dark cello melodies and earthy sensibilities were a great foil for singer Nic Offer’s (of !!!) spazzy freak-outs in that band.
JEAN ON JEAN is Schnick’s proper solo debut, and moves in a different direction from the ‘Hud. Her cello is still central, but this is sweet, melancholy folk-pop, focussing on Schnick’s haunting and beautiful multi-tracked vocals and introspective poetry. [Other Music]

After two months and a handful of shows in Brooklyn and Manhattan, FRICTION returns home tonight to The Mercury Lounge with its third “Crystal” band of the year. We’ve had Castles and Stilts, now make way for Crystal Antlers who are bringing their combustible live show all the way from Long Beach, CA. With an explosive build-up of noise and melody blended with raw vocals and twisting riffs, this quintet has mastered the art of thrash. Brooklyn synthfolk darlings Chairlift and borough-mates Religious Knives, best known to dish out delicious plates of noisy psych-rock, round out the bill. Tickets.

GET HYPE! Long Beach California’s Crystal Antlers bring their pummeling live show to the East Coast for this installment of FRICTION at The Mercury Lounge on July 8th. With an explosive build-up of noise and melody blended with raw vocals and twisting riffs, this quintet has mastered the art of thrash. Brooklyn synthfolk darlings Chairlift (who’s debut LP, Does You Inspire You is about to drop) and borough-mates Religious Knives (Resin recently reviewed here), best known to dish out delicious plates of noise, round out this bill.
This will be the last of what seemed like a crazy string of shows every other week since the beginning of May, as FRICTION returns to its once a month schedule for the remainder of the summer. Advance tickets are on sale now, doors at 7:30pm.
Long Beach’s
CRYSTAL ANTLERS have mastered the art of thrash, that combustible build-up of noise and melody that so many others have tried to harness, only to fail in a miserable pool of fuzzy annoyance. Blending messy, raspy vocals with pummeling drums, writhing riffs and strident organs, the band produce a kaleidoscopic tornado of inflection that’s so right-this-very-moment. [Orange County Weekly]

Daylight Savings EP, while tethered to a solid core of hook-laden, keyboard driven indie-rock, opens its arms wide to encompass stabs of psychedelia and winsomely quirky, oh-so-slight vocals which evoke Kate Bush as much as Regina Spektor. The trio knows how to skirt the edge of pretension with out falling over, and makes a chirpy, joyously brainy noise in the process. [The Onion]
