We’ve followed the golden fox, held the golden key, and have seen the golden light. The band that’s piqued everyone’s curiosity for the last six months is about to shed their veil of mystery. On January 30th, New York City’s nu-disco outfit, <a href="http://thegoldenfilter.co.uk/"target="_blank">THE GOLDEN FILTER, will make their North American debut at (Le) Poisson Rouge. <a href="http://www.myspace.com/heartsrevolution"target="_blank">HEARTSREVOLUTION with their distorted, punchy electro 8-bit and fine purveyors of dirty Philly tech-house bangers, <a href="http://pinkskull.com/"target="_blank">PINK SKULL, round out this modern-day disco rager. <a href="http://www.fotpnyc.com/"target="_blank">FINGER ON THE PULSE DJs drop the jams all night. Presented by FRICTION NYC and (Le) Poisson Rouge. GET HYPE!

Advanced tickets are available at the (Le) Poisson Rouge website. Doors open at 10:00 PM, flyer, mp3′s, and more below.

“New York City’s THE GOLDEN FILTER may have just put out one of the sexiest jams of the summer with ‘Solid Gold’ and no one knows a single thing about them. A revved up, glittery disco-bassline and icy synths anchor your feet to the dancefloor while airy female vocals breeze past on rays of golden light – a combination that’s enough to cool you on the most humid of days.” [FRICTION NYC]

“Beware; those who enter the HEARTSREVOLUTION world may never leave. Ben and Lo’s music takes hold of you with its silvery, digital clutch – cut’n’paste, overlapping beats, dream-like synths and mantra lyrics – and never lets you go.” [NME]
[MP3]: “C.Y.O.A.”

”
PINK SKULL‘s first full-length released earlier this year (Zeppelin 3), plays like a time- and genre-transcending masterpiece like nothing you’ve heard — a mélange of soundscapes ranging from dancefloor killers to experimental funk to psych-rock to ultra-low-key acoustic folk.” [Prefixmag]

GET HYPE one last time in 2008! Prior to the mad-rush of the holiday season, FRICTION is back at The Mercury Lounge for one final show in 2008, closing out three full years of shows. This lineup features <a href="http://www.myspace.com/violensmusic"target="_blank">Violens, <a href="http://www.myspace.com/telepathe"target="_blank">Telepathe, <a href="http://www.myspace.com/picturepicturepicture"target="_blank">Picture Picture, and <a href="http://www.myspace.com/warofzaza"target="_blank">Zaza, four local acts you’ll be hearing plenty more from in 2009.

<a href="http://www.ticketmaster.com/event/00004158F1B884F7?artistid=1268696&majorcatid=10001&minorcatid=60"target="_blank">Advanced tickets are available on The Mercury Lounge website. Doors open at 7:30pm, flyer, mp3′s, and more below.

“VIOLENS clearly draws from the mid-’80s U.K. indie scene (Aztec Camera, the Pale Fountains, Prefab Sprout) but doesn’t sound derivative of anyone; the group’s evocation of that era’s internationalist style and wit comes wrapped in a cool emotionalism that also characterizes Violens’ onstage vibe. The only issue with their shows is that we can’t get them to play a song more than once.” [Time Out NY]
[MP3]: <a href="http://frictionnyc.com/blog/downloads/violentsensationdescends.mp3"target="_blank">“Violent Sensation Descends”

“TELEPATHE forge largely improvised guitar gusts, woodsy chirps, wraithlike Bjorkian harmonies, and powerfully jabbed drums into minimalist baroque.” [Village Voice]
[MP3]: <a href="http://frictionnyc.com/blog/downloads/devilstrident.mp3"target="_blank">“Devil’s Trident”

“PICTURE PICTURE are nestled pretty nicely in the Brooklyn nu-psych scene that’s birthed MGMT, Yeasayer, and Chairlift. ‘Liftoff’ begins with an off-tempo blues sample that’s then doused in squirming moogs, autotuned falsettos and enough jagged editing to make your skull shake. It’s heady, for sure, but it’s also strangely enjoyable, never once seeming complacent or cliché, unless to be ironically so.” [RCRD LBL]
[MP3]: <a href="http://frictionnyc.com/blog/downloads/jealouschangeofmind.mp3"target="_blank">“Jealous Change Of Mind”

“New York-based two-piece, ZAZA, let their echo-laden vocals wash over waves of gothy, post-punk-influenced guitars and muscular percussion for a sound that is, at once, sensual and suspenseful. Erotic thrillers would be well matched with these eerie, enticing songs, which can make crime scenes and sex scenes alike seem more mysterious.” [Rumblefish]
With an explosive build-up of noise and melody blended with raw vocals and twisting riffs, this quintet has mastered the art of thrash. Philly’s hypnotic, dance-floor-friendly enthusiasts, <a href="http://www.myspace.com/pinkskulltheband"target=_"blank">PINK SKULL (first-ever all ages show!!!), and Kansas City’s fine purveyors of dark psych, <a href="http://www.myspace.com/mythicalbeast"target="_blank">MYTHICAL BEAST round out the bill. Be sure to knock back a couple of extra Bloody Mary’s at brunch and/or an extra six-pack of Kenzinger during the game before heading over to The Barbary for this Sunday evening jawn.

This is an ALL AGES EARLY SHOW!!! with doors opening at 6:00pm. Advanced tickets available <a href="http://philadelphia.going.com/crystalantlers"target="_blank">here. The Barbary is located at 951 Frankford Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19125 (215 634-7400).

“Existing at the cross-section of so many styles, CRYSTAL ANTLERS debut EP (Touch & Go) finds the band at a more important nexus of potential and realization. In person, Crystal Antlers look like outcasts from six different bands, and at various points on this record, they sound like it, too: Merging psych, garage, lo-fi, prog, and countless other influences, the group easily maintains consistency despite a complete inability to be pinned to any specific movement or trend.” [Pitchfork, Best New Music]

“Steeped in the darkest recesses of psych’s heart, MYTHICAL BEAST‘s tracks [on their debut album, Scales] smolder with scorched earth and the black taste of doom. But there is light at the edges of Mythical Beast’s universe and though the themes are dark there’s a sad hope that looms present behind the clouds of destruction. The band has pulled itself to the forefront of modern psychedelia, and this album [recorded with Greg Weeks at Language of Stone in Philly] will more than likely serve as a jumping off point for great things to come.” [Raven Sings the Blues]

GET HYPE! With our second show of the weekend, on the eve(-ish) of CMJ, FRICTION invades <a href="http://www.cake-shop.com"target="_blank">Cake Shop with a lineup designed to make you stay put. Save those feet from all of the pavement pounding they’re about to do a few days later and get a jump on some of the most anticipated bands featured during this year’s CMJ <del datetime="2008-10-09T03:13:54+00:00">clusterfuck</del> festival. New York City’s blissful noise-pop darlings, <a href="http://www.myspace.com/thepainsofbeingpureatheart"target="_blank">The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, along with recent Jagjaguwar signees <a href="http://www.myspace.com/womenmusic"target="_blank">Women (Alberta, CA), and fine purveyors of 60s garage straight-outta Queens, <a href="http://www.myspace.com/thebeetsbeat"target="_blank">The Beets are featured on this bill. Toronto’s <a href="http://www.myspace.com/katiestelmanis"target="_blank">Katie Stelmanis and her aresenal of piano and MIDI noise percolations and classically trained vocals to boot, opens the show.

Tickets are just $8 and available the night of the show at Cake Shop. Doors @ 7:30pm

THE PAINS OF BEING PURE AT HEART “mix sugary boy/girl vocals, Jesus & Mary Chain’s rain clouds and Darklands drum machine minus the face-melting noise, sneaker-gazing a la Black Tambourine (or, hey hey, rifle through the rest of the Slumberland back catalog to namedrop something with a bit more jangle) and punky Comet Gain(s) into addictive pop gold that locates a place beyond the band’s well-chosen influences.” [Stereogum]
[MP3]: <a href="http://frictionnyc.com/blog/downloads/pains_-_come_saturday.mp3"target="_blank">“Come Saturday”

WOMEN “straddle the 1960s divide between the Warhol crowd’s speed-addled New York cynicism and the echoes of psychedelic San Francisco that bubbled up across the pond in the fey, catchy pop of UK groups like the Zombies.” [Pitchfork]
[MP3]: <a href="http://frictionnyc.com/blog/downloads/WOMEN-BLACK-RICE.mp3"target="_blank">“Black Rice”

“I’d stay for just one song, but once they began playing their classic 60s garage rock I was gripped. Twin guitars beamed rhythmically forward, punctuated by strokes of brush snare and flicking around vocals that seemed perfectly, timelessly at ease in the music. This is a band that seemed to have appeared out of the ground (of Queens, apparently) fully formed without a formative period. Predictions are dangerous so I’ll try to sidestep making one now, but wherever THE BEETS may go from here, I have a feeling it’ll be worth watching.” [Impose]
[MP3]: <a href="http://frictionnyc.com/blog/downloads/the_Beets_Happy_But_on_My_Way.mp3"target="_blank">“Happy But On My Way”

“The drama of Kate Bush and Toyah Wilcox mixed with the
sturm and drang of Diamanda Galas and the pop bubbles of Lena Lovich or Ann Steel shouldn’t make any sense whatsoever but in the world of 23-year-old Torontonian KATIE STELMANIS it comes together. Possessed of a classically trained voice that stuns at 10 paces, Stelmanis’ arsenal is simple—piano and midi noise percolations shape simple songs that subtly grow into powerful, cathartic moments.”

“JAPANTHER is one of the hardest fucking bands in Brooklyn right now. They sound like Iron Maiden, Throbbing Gristle, and Lightning Bolt gave birth to a squealing little baby with flaming guitars for arms. Their shows are chaotic and danger-charged lovefests and they are frighteningly dedicated to keeping it underground.” [Vice]
You might want to call NINJASONIK. These Brooklyn art-hop pranksters combine spiky beats with rhymes about grabbing asses and the skinny jeans they wear…Mostly, though, people have been talking about these foul mouthed Ninjas for their debauchery fueled live shows, which has seen plenty of crowd diving and drunken punk rock antics…Whoa! One song’s about a dinosaur bird plucking a friend off the street, then blood dripping from the sky. These two songs fit nicely, somewhere between the Bananas’ knack for making songs that rock hard and sweet yet remain fuzzy and gritty and the Fleshies’ superhuman ability to trailer hitch old-fashioned rock hooks onto new, not-quite-definable wingnut weirdness. Live, KILLER DREAMER boom the hell out of a living room.” [Razorcake]

Thanks to everyone who made last week’s <a href="http://www.frictionnyc.com"target="_blank">FRICTION show at Mercury Lounge a jam-packed, sold-out and festive affair. We’re back again this month with another show at Cake Shop on September 22nd with downtown darling, <a href="http://www.myspace.com/lizzytrullie"target="_blank">Lissy Trullie, atmospheric rockers <a href="http://www.myspace.com/apse"target="_blank">Apse, who are making a special trip down to NYC following ATP New York and <a href="http://www.myspace.com/jeanonjean"target="_blank">Jean on Jean. This will be Jean on Jean’s (Molly Schnick from Out Hud new project) debut live show in support of her new self-titled album (Kanine Records), so be sure to get there early!

>>>Tickets are $7 the night of the show, doors @ 7:30pm

LISSY TRULLIE sings with the boyish swagger of a ’60s frontman with a touch of Liz Phair and plays guitar a bit like one too. Her band harbors key pieces of 1960s folkishness making their music a vintage yet modern affair. [Pretty In Black]
[MP3]: <a href="http://frictionnyc.com/blog/downloads/selftaughtlearner.mp3"target="_blank">“Self Taught Learner”

The first rumble of percussion and muscular, sharply panned bass guitar, demonstrates why “post-rock” isn’t quite the best word for APSE‘s forceful atmospheric rock. Yes, the guitars settle into densely knotted krautrock repetitions, changing textures more readily than chords. Yes, the synths are glacial, majestic. Yes, Robert Toher’s reverb-cloaked ethereal wail could nestle easily into a latter-day Radiohead or Sigur Ros track, but that grimly apocalyptic rhythm section suggests Drum’s Not Dead just as much as In Rainbows. [Pitchfork]
[MP3]: <a href="http://frictionnyc.com/blog/downloads/shadeofthemoor.mp3"target="_blank">“Shade Of The Moor”

It has been a while since we heard from Out Hud’s Molly Schnick, whose dark cello melodies and earthy sensibilities were a great foil for singer Nic Offer’s (of !!!) spazzy freak-outs in that band. JEAN ON JEAN is Schnick’s proper solo debut, and moves in a different direction from the ‘Hud. Her cello is still central, but this is sweet, melancholy folk-pop, focussing on Schnick’s haunting and beautiful multi-tracked vocals and introspective poetry. [Other Music]
Brooklyn’s euphoric new wavers <a target="_blank" href="http://www.myspace.com/blipblipbleep"target="_blank">Blip Blip Bleep ready the dancefloor with shimmering pop hooks and throbbing beats. As with most FRICTION lineups, openers <a target="_blank" href="http://www.myspace.com/bottleupandgoband"target="_blank">Bottle Up & Go are the curveball here, who play a brand of stripped down, rowdy blues, sorta like Black Keys but with more whiskey and abrasiveness. <a href="http://www.myspace.com/megawattinho"target="_blank">M68 (Arsed, dirty little stayout) spins between sets.

>>> Advance tix <a href="http://www.ticketmaster.com/event/0000410DCD3772E6?artistid=1247927&majorcatid=10001&minorcatid=60"target="_blank">here, doors @ 7:30pm

BEAR HANDS proudly carry the “classic” indie-rock torch, but with respectful nods (headbangs, perhaps?) to the best — and catchiest — ’90s alt-rock. Live, the young Brooklyn quartet enthusiastically trumps seasoned elders, forcing the most jaded NYC concertgoers to uncross their arms. [Flavorpill]
[MP3]: <a href="http://frictionnyc.com/blog/downloads/golden.mp3"target="_blank">“Golden”

You will be hearing a lot about BOY CRISIS over the next few months because they are the subject of hysterical hype and rampant A&R buzz, because they make music based on a shared love of Prince, Talking Heads, Chic, Pet Shop Boys and Zapp – and for once it actually sounds like it – and because they are the hottest electronic pop group to emerge from America since, ooh, MGMT at least. Only, as that list of influences suggests, they’re more funktronic than psychedelic: Studio 54 disco with a hint of CBGBs grit. [The Guardian]
[MP3]: <a href="http://frictionnyc.com/blog/downloads/dressedtodigress.mp3"target="_blank">“Dressed To Digress”

Reminiscent of new wave bands such as New Order and Duran Duran, BLIP BLIP BLEEP creates euphoric, catching songs with a twinge of kitsch but bring youthful references that make them relevant in this day and age without the pains of nostalgia. [The Deli Mag]
[MP3]: <a href="http://frictionnyc.com/blog/downloads/okaylover.mp3"target="_blank">“Okay Lover”

BOTTLE UP & GO vomit their music with remarkable deftness, plowing through stripped down, jacked up bluesy anthems with the aura of a wounded pride fighting for redemption. This is a band that has taken on the blues not only with a guitar and a bottle of the good stuff, but also with a never-say-die punk attitude that won’t give up, but just might drink until it doesn’t remember anymore. [Impose Magazine]
