Last year we had Gary Higgins’ Red Hash, while this year Colour Green was released after thirty years in relative obscurity.

I was fortunate enough to get exposed to Gary Higgins last year while taking photographs for Splendid Magazine, catching his first show in 30+ years at Tonic. Red Hash is a devastatingly beautiful collection of songs recorded at a time when Higgins may have felt that this may be his last chance at capturing his feelings in his music. Like Red Hash, Sibylle Baier’s Colour Green is a pure, stunning, and intimate collection of songs that sucks me in everytime I listen to it.

Baier, a German born actress, drew inspiration for Colour Green from a road trip taken across Germany with her friend in the early 70′s. Apparently, this was a particular “dark and moody period” of her life, which is beautifully captured in the melancholy melodies of her songs. Upon returning home, Baier recorded “Remember the Day” on a portable reel to reel recorder in her bedroom giving the album it’s lo-fi and private feel. Colour Green was then recorded over the span of 1970-1973.

Baier eventually moved away from her career as an actress and musician opting for a family life. Thanks to Robby Baier and Orange Twin Records for digging up and finally releasing this gem.

Check out “Tonight” below and pick up the album at Insound or Other Music.
