Check this out on the blog Sincerely Maya. This was a knee-slapper when I saw/read it. We all looked different when we were young and in high school, but this is straight up wrong what this girl done uncovered about Mr. Paul Banks from Interpol. Could of been worse, he could of looked like a total tool. This sort of thing could actually get more girls swooning overing him. My favorite part is “I remember him wearing baggy jeans with birkenstocks a lot. And that ski hat he’s wearing…” I wonder what Carlos D looked like?
As most of you may have already heard, the club synonymous with punk and underground music, CBGB’s, is set to close its doors for good on Septeber 30th. However, the venue isn’t going to go quietly, there are some great shows planned at the club over the next month or so including tonight’s brought to you by the good people at Gothamist and Product Shop NYC. The lineup includes Tiny Masters of Today, Slowlands, The Diggs and a couple of surprises yet to be announced. Tickets are just $7.
In other Diggs news, a couple of reliable sources informed me that Tim (of The Diggs) is going to be joining Cassettes Won’t Listen on stage at this week’s FRICTION show for the remix of “Everyone’s Starting Over.” Should be pretty sweet!
I’m back! after a festive week full of riding horses and Tex-Mex down in Texas. After a drinking bender that ended at 4 in the morning, I finally caught Muse‘s ‘Knights of Cyclonia’ on VH1. Part weird sci-fi/spaghetti western/kung fu flick, this video is tha bomb! These Radiohead/Freddie Mercury/Queen sound alikes have put out a pretty rockin’ new album (Though the ugliest cover I’ve seen in a while). Justin is probably rolling his eyes right now at me for even watching VH1.
The Shackeltons are Mark Redding on vocals, guitarist’s Eric Fisak and Daniel Schuchman, bassist Justin McDaniel, and Sean Hallock on drums.
After hearing KEXP play The Shackeltons all week long, we decided to see what all the fuss was about and caught their set at Pianos on Saturday night. Aside from a few jitters early in their set, this five-piece from Chambersburg, PA showed A LOT of potential. I had only heard a couple songs before going to the show and was really impressed with the band’s other material. Their live show is a rollercoster of urgency that quells into calmer, quieter moments. Frontman, Mark Redding feeds off his band’s energy, softly speaking through a megaphone during the quieter moments and shouting his way through the fiery assaults of the dual guitars when the band revs it up.
The Shackeltons incorporate a broad range of influences into their sound, combining the dynamics and intensity of Slint’s quiet-loud pattern with the angular guitar riffs of DC bands like Fugazi and Jawbox rounded out with echoing guitars reminiscent of The Chameleons and Interpol. The band reminds me a lot of Portland, Oregon’s The Dutch Flat, who put out one of my favorite releases in 2003. The Shackeltons are definitely a band to keep an eye on. Check out, “Your Movement” and “Tiger” below and head over to their MySpace page for some more songs.
So, being sick this weekend and spending most of it in a drug-induced stupor in front of the tube, I was magically awoken Saturday afternoon by the sounds of Explosions in The Sky. I immediately thought I had the best girlfriend in the word and she somehow knew the best medicine to cure any illness is to listen to Your Hand in Mine over and over again- so you can imagine my surprise when I opened my eyes to a Cadillac Commercial!
Part of me wanted to hate on EITS for selling out to the Ad world, part of me was so happy to hear these guys really get their sound out there (since no one ever saw Friday Night Lights), and part of me just wanted another shot of Thera-Flu to crawl back into my shell (that’s 3 parts…is that possible?)
I started bitching about it to a guy at work and he said he was listening to the radio this wekeend and came across an Outback Steakhouse commercial with a stellar remix of Of Montreal’s Wraith Pinned to the Mist. True songwriting talent comes out with TV-licious, re-made lyrics like “‘Let’s pretend we’re at Outback Steakhouse”…
In a frantic search to find these videos, I came across another blogger ranting about The Black Eyes posing themselves for a Nissan Xterra commercial with Set You Free.
This can all only lead to one feasible outcome = Indie Rock is taking over the world!!
And one feasible question = what is your favorite ripped-off TV commercial song?
If you disagree and really want some quality, moralistic, good family-entertainment advertising I would suggest my favorites: Trunk Monkey or 1-800-Got-Junk.
