Thee More Shallows | Monkey vs. Shark EP

I’m sitting in the office baffled by the huge snowflakes falling past my window. At times they’re flying upward and sideways violently due to the draft between the two buildings and at other moments they flow peacefully by the window like a river. Luckily, I have the perfect soundtrack for watching them fall. I received an email last night with a link to listen to an advance version of Thee More Shallows new 7-song EP, Monkey vs. Shark. Thee More Shallows were (and still are) one of my favorite discoveries of last year and Monkey vs Shark picks up where More Deep Cuts left off. Songs like ‘Phineas Bogg’ and ‘Dutch Slaver’ off of Monkey vs. Shark can only be described as hauntingly beautiful, lush and layered rock songs with the hushed vocals of Dee Kesler that “drag you into the deep end.†The EP also contains the bands rendition of Al Green’s ‘I Can’t Get Next To You’ along with an excellent remix of ‘Freshman Thesis’ (‘Freshman Remix’) by Odd Nodsam and Why?. I highly recommend picking up a copy of this EP, especially for fans of Elliot Smith, Radiohead, GSYBE!, EiTS, and Grandaddy.
Monkey vs. Shark is due out on Turn Records on May 9, but can be ordered from the Turn Records Store now. The band is currently touring in Europe, but will return for U.S. dates in May.
